It has become a source of concern as police personnel’s are meant to be best of friends where ever they are in private and in public while discharging their duty.

Unfortunately, they resort to tackling their disagreements with violence that often lead to one of them stabbing or shooting his colleague. Where is the spirit of ‘Espiri de Corp’.

In October, a police officer in Kebbi State stabbed his colleague to death following a heated argument.

An Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), Abdullahi Garba, reportedly stabbed his colleague, ASP Shu’aibu Sani-Malunfashi, on his left ribs with a scissors.

In a press statement, the Kebbi State Police Command Public Relations Officer, DSP Nafi’u Abubakar, said the duo had an altercation in front of one ASP Garba’s shop that degenerated to a fight.

The PPRO said the Kebbi State Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Magaji-Kontagora, on receiving the report, ordered an immediate investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

He said, “ CP has condemned the unfortunate incident, describing it as contrary to the training, act and regulations of the Police Force, as well as other relevant laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“The incident happened on October 1, 2022. In the course of the brawl, ASP Abdullahi Garba stabbed ASP Shu’aibu Sani-Malunfashi on his left ribs with a scissors.

“On receipt of the report, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), Argungu, swiftly rushed to the scene, arrested the erring officer, and recovered the exhibit the (scissors used as a weapon). He rushed ASP Shu’aibu Sani Malunfashi to Sir Yahaya Memorial Hospital, Birnin Kebbi, where regrettably, a medical doctor confirmed him dead.

“Consequently, the erring police officer, ASP Abdullahi Garba, was immediately arrested and detained at the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Birnin Kebbi. The case was also referred to the homicide section of Kebbi Police Command for a discreet investigation to unravel the circumstances surrounding the ugly incident.”

It will be recalled that similar incident was recorded within the month of October, when About two weeks ago, an officer in Anambra was arrested for stabbing his colleague. The Commissioner also ordered investigation, dince then no report on the outcome of the investigation.

Speaking on the rate of reckless violation of the rule of engagement, on basic compliance to the principle of ‘Espiri De Corp’ , Clinton Kenechukwu E. a Security Consultant, Criminologist and Forensic Expert, told National Detective Magazine, that it was a threat to adequate and effective policing, where in friendliness exists within security personell.
He stated that one of the causative factors is the consumption of illicit drugs that affects their brain, reasoning and physical comportment.

Clinton advised the police authorities were this condition is gradually increasing to re-engage their personnel on trainings that will reduce the growing incident within the police force.
He also advised that the officers need to be motivated enough to avoid their directing their frustration to their colleagues.
